Michael Savage’s asinine comments on autism

Over at The Hill, PA Dem Rep Mike Doyle has posted a blog entry calling out Michael Savage (the smashingly asinine “shock jock”) over these recent remarks about autism:

“[Y]ou want me to tell you my opinion on autism, since I’m not talking about autism?  A fraud, a racket…. I’ll tell you what autism is.  In 99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out.  That’s what autism is.  What do you mean they scream and they’re silent?  They don’t have a father around to tell them, ‘Don’t act like a moron.  You’ll get nowhere in life.  Stop acting like a putz.  Straighten up.  Act like a man.  Don’t sit there crying and screaming, idiot.’ “ (July 16 radio show)

Doyle has the response right:

I understand that shock jocks get the big bucks for being as obnoxious and controversial as possible – but there’s no reason we have to stand idly by and let Mr. Savage boost his market share at the expense of families who are dealing with a heartbreaking and financially draining health issue.

Completely unrelated to Doyle, as far as I can tell, some folks started up this petition , asking that Savage be fired over his attack on Autism.  Here’s the text:

Michael Savage has gone to far in his prejudice and discriminationof children with autism.  Autism is a neuro-developmental medical condition that requires early identification and lifelong treatment.  He has crossed the line by making children the object of his shock radio tactics and promoting mistreatment of children with disabilities.  He must be swiftly fired for his abusive perspective on children whose condition is no fault of there own.  Children with autism deserve our respect for their bravery in tackling an incurable condition.

As I write this, it has 4,464 signatures.

UPDATE:  Michael Savage’s response to critics of his rant against autism:

My comments about autism were meant to boldly awaken parents and children to the medical community’s attempt to label too many children or adults as “autistic.”

Just as some drug companies have overdiagnosed “ADD” and “ADHD” to peddle dangerous speed-like drugs to children as young as 4 years of age, this cartel of doctors and drug companies is now creating a national panic by overdiagnosing “autism, for which there is no definitive medical diagnosis!

Many children are being victimized by being diagnosed with an “illness” which may not exist, in all cases. Just a few weeks ago doctors recommended dangerous anti-cholesterol drugs for children as young as 2 years of age! Without any scientific studies on the possible dangers of such drugs on children, corrupt doctors made this controversial, unscientific recommendation.

Increasingly, our children are being used as profit centers by a greedy, corrupt medical/pharmaceutical establishment. As the brother of a severely disabled person who suffered and died in a New York “snake-pit” of a “mental hospital,” I know first-hand what true disability is.

To permit greedy doctors to include children in medical categories which may not be appropriate is a crime against that child and their family. Let the truly autistic be treated. Let the falsely diagnosed be free.

Michael Savage

Seriously.  And from the radio station that carries his crap:

It should be noted that WOR is neither responsible for nor endorses the views of Michael Savage.  This is a syndicated show that WOR airs for our listeners’ enjoyment.  WOR is in the business of serving the community in which we broadcast.  That is our stated goal, and we will continue to do so.  We regret any consternation that Michael Savage’s remarks may have caused to our listeners, and we hope that the ensuing dialogue will lead us all to a better place.

“Consternation.”  Gotta love it.

  1. Uninversal Healthcare is no Bargain
This comment is about the two presidential candidates plans for healthcare. They both want to move in the direction of “universal coverage”, and both have clearly not considered the topic before they offered their plans.
    Five points:
    1. Most people in the USA have health insurance that provides better coverage than is available in other countries with so-called coverage.
    2. Go to Canada, and you discover that the so=called universal coverage does not cocer drugs unless the drug is prescribed in a hospital stay. Most Canadians have private , supplimentary plans from the employers that brings them almost to a level as good ad in the USA. They still must endure long delays in many instances.
    3. If the candidates want to create universal coverage, do it for the uninsured, but please don’t ruin it for the rest of us.
    4. I’ll share this anecdote. last December, I had pneumonia. I went to a doctor in Toronto, who recomended a CT scan as part of the diagnostic regime. Then he leaned over and recommended that I go to the USA for the scan, unless I was prepared to wait 3-4 weeks (by which time I maight have passed away!!). I went back aceoss the border and had the CT scan in 3 days (a weekend intervened), and was completely coveredwith my USA health insurance.
