So we knew this was coming

But it’s despicable, none the less.  The a*&holes on the right (Limbaugh, Savage, Corsi of “Obama Nation” fame) have concluded that the “real” reason behind Obama’s trip to Hawaii is not to visit his dying grandmother, but to “deal with” his (non-existent) birth certificate “issue.”  From Media Matters:

On the October 23 broadcast of his radio show, Limbaugh said:

Who announces days in advance they’re rushing to the side of a loved one who is deathly ill, but keeps campaigning in a race that’s said to be over, only to go to the loved one’s side days later? See, I think this is about something else. You know what’s really percolating out there? And I’ve been laying low on this because it just — it hasn’t met the threshold to pass the smell test on this program. But this birth certificate business, this lawsuit that a guy named Phillip Berg filed in Philadelphia in August for Obama to produce his genuine birth certificate, and he still hasn’t replied, he hasn’t done so.

Limbaugh later added:

When you first announced this, you’re gonna rush, you’re gonna hurry, you’re gonna make tracks, you’re gonna get over there because you don’t want your grandmother to die before you got there like your mother did, but somehow you keep campaigning, you take three days to get over there, if he’s left yet. And this birth certificate business — I’m just wondering if something’s up. I have no clue, and I — folks, I’m telling you, this has not reached the threshold until now, and it’s now popping up all over the place.

During an appearance on the October 22 broadcast of Liddy’s radio show, Corsi said:

I’m headed out to Honolulu. I am not convinced that Barack Obama is going because his grandmother is sick. I appreciate that his grandmother is sick and he wants to be with her. I do recall that Barack Obama’s mother died of cancer, and he didn’t go to be by her side when she died. He relates that in his autobiography, Dreams From My Father. And I’m going out to do what digging I can on the birth certificate.

Corsi later added:

I think I’ll accomplish something in Hawaii, too. Obama’s headed out there, and I believe there’s a court challenge that if Obama does not dodge, he’s gonna be forced to produce a birth certificate, and there’s gonna be something damaging on that birth certificate, because even at the eleventh hour, Obama refuses to show us the hospital-generated birth certificate when he was born.

As Media Matters has noted, Corsi has previously claimed that the Obama campaign “refuses to release the original birth certificate,” even though WorldNetDaily — where Corsi works as a staff writer — has debunked the claim.

On the October 22 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, Savage stated that “[t]here are people arguing that Obama is headed back to Hawaii not so much to visit an ailing relative, but to fudge the birth certificate in question” and said moments later, “There is intense national interest on the Internet about his citizenship, and the question is being asked, could this be the real reason he is headed to Hawaii?” Savage subsequently became more definitive, stating:

Do you actually believe he’s going to Hawaii to visit his ailing grandmother with 10 days to go until an election? Do you actually believe that? Do you actually believe he’d be going to Hawaii at this time with 10 days to go? You actually believe that? No, no, no — no, no, no, no, no. No. There’s some other reason that he’s leaving the mainland of the United States in the midst of this toe-to-toe struggle right now, and it’s got to do with his birth certificate.

He later added: “And Obama’s leaving for Hawaii — why? Why? What’s he doing there? Why’s he going there, huh? What’s he going there for, huh? Why’s he gonna — the last phase of a race, he’s getting off the track just to visit his grandmother? Don’t be stupid. It’s the birth certificate issue, you fools, you.”

Savage also directed people to his website to “look at the birth certificate and judge for yourself on We actually have the birth certificate submitted by the Obama camp, and it looks like it’s fake.” Savage’s website currently has a copy of the birth certificate Obama has posted on its “Fight the Smears” website along with a headline stating “Could this be the REAL reason Obama is heading to Hawaii?” The headline links to a post by Andy Martin on Martin’s Contrarian Commentary website. Martin stated in an October 20 press release: “Monday (today) we petitioned the Hawai’i Supreme Court to order Obama’s secret birth records released. How did Obama respond? He suddenly discovered that his grandmother, who had supposedly been released from her hospital a week ago, when he showed no interest in her, needed his immediate attention. Cool, calm, collected Obama suddenly suspended his campaign and headed for Hawai’i.”

Yeah, we knew something like this would come.  It’s still stomach turning.  No, it’s not racist.  It’s just an assault on humanity, on decency, on kindness and generosity.  It’s an assault on the Chrisitianity these folks on the “Christian right” say they espouse.  It’s a sign of desperation.  It’s conspiracy theory at its best.  It’s ridiculous and obscence.  And people will believe it.  Sadly, people will believe it.

My point exactly

In an article out of the Chicago Tribune yesterday, Darrell West, director of governance studies at the Brookings Institution had this to say:

Obama is about as far from being a socialist as Joe The Plumber is from being a rocket scientist.  I think it’s hard for McCain to call Obama a socialist when George Bush is nationalizing banks.

My point exactly.

Push Poll

I received the following email and am reprinting all of the info here, with permission.  It’s instructive to see what’s really happening.  Note:  the respondent does not really believe that Barack Obama is a Muslim (but as Colin Powell says, so what if he were?).  Several groups, listed below, are calling for a return call campaign to jam the phone lines of this push polling organization.

Dear friends,
I just received a presumably McCain push poll on my cell phone.  The push poll was as follows:
      * Push Poll (PP): Are you intending to vote in the 2008 presidential election?
            o Me:  Yes
      * PP:  Do you intend to vote for John McCain?
            o Me:  No
      * PP:  Do you intend to vote for Barack Obama?
            o Me:  Yes
      * PP:  Do you want a strong President who will manage the economy?
            o Me:  Yes
      * PP:  Did you know about Barack Obama’s affiliations to Fannie Mae and Fannie Mac and that most of his contributors are Washington lobbyists representing the corrupt firms that caused the financial crisis?
            o Me:  Yes
      * PP:  Does this make you less likely to vote for Barack Obama?
            o Me:  No
      * PP:  Did you know about Barack Obama’s affiliation to terrorist Bill Ayers and to the fraudulent voter registration organizationAcorn?
            o Me:  Yes
      * PP:  Does this make you less likely to vote for Barack Obama?
            o Me:  No
      * PP:  Are the values of the candidates important for you in this election?
            o Me:  Yes
      * PP:  Did you know that Obama is a muslim?
            o Me:  Yes
      * PP:  Does this make you less likely to vote for Barack Obama?
            o Me:  No
      * PP:  We are going to ask you a series of questions about your demographics.  Is this ok?
            o Me:  Yes
      * PP:  What is your age?
            o Me:  34
      * PP:  (Inaudible)
            o Me:  (Silence)
      * PP:  Thank you ver much for taking time to answer the survey of the Political Action Committee for Change (not sure, if this was the name or not).  This is an independent survey and is not affiliated with the political campaigns of John McCain or Barack Obama. (End of call)

The number was registered on my caller ID as the following:  703-263-2155
Let’s call this number and shut it down!  🙂

You should read the comments on my blog entry in at
   * Someone named NH Flaming Moderate ( claimed to have been called from that number today, but she was unable to answer because she was at a soccer game.
   * Another person named Ballerina X ( claims the caller ID read “Perry Elaine.”
   * Another person named jgilhousen ( claimed the location was “Herndon VA” and said that “there are several marketing/political research companies there, any of whom could be the culprit.”  Another person says the caller ID read:  PUBSRV 2008.
   * Someone named Msanger ( received the same exact call in Georgia at 4.30 pm Saturday.
   * If you google Elaine Perry, she does voice overs:
Also, there have been twelve complaints registered against this phone number online:
On these lists of complaints, one person who answered the calls said they were repeated calls by the Huckabee campaign.

The Mormons for Obama on Yahoo Groups have organized a concerted effort to call the number en mass.  They said they were initially getting a voice mail but now are actually getting a busy signal.

Someone in the Feminists for Obama Yahoo Group wrote:

All I could find out about that number is that it is a verizon phone and it is in Centerville, VA. If you want to find out the persons name and address, you have to pay 40 bucks. I tried calling and it just kept ringing. You may want to check with verizon though.

A fellow Truman Scholar wrote me 15 minutes ago to say:

Based on other comments I’ve found online, I think this is the organization that pays for those calls:

The man behind the smears

Yesterday, the New York Times published an article called, The Man Behind the Whispers About Obama.  I

Andy Martin

Andy Martin

encourage you to read the whole thing.  There are some key points that, I think, are useful for me to highlight.  First, his name is Andy Martin and he’s been at this since 2004.  He is a would-be attorney, who attended law school but was never admitted to the bar:

He is a law school graduate, but his admission to the Illinois bar was blocked in the 1970s after a psychiatric finding of “moderately severe character defect manifested by well-documented ideation with a paranoid flavor and a grandiose character.”

He is anti-Semitic:

He prepared to run as a Democrat for Congress in Connecticut, where paperwork for one of his campaign committees listed as one purpose “to exterminate Jew power.”

Yet in various court papers, Mr. Martin had impugned Jews.

A motion he filed in a 1983 bankruptcy case called the judge “a crooked, slimy Jew who has a history of lying and thieving common to members of his race.”

In another motion, filed in 1983, Mr. Martin wrote, “I am able to understand how the Holocaust took place, and with every passing day feel less and less sorry that it did.”

In an interview, Mr. Martin denied some statements against Jews attributed to him in court papers, blaming malicious judges for inserting them.

But in his “48 Hours” interview in 1993, he affirmed a different anti-Semitic part of the affidavit that included the line about the Holocaust, saying, “The record speaks for itself.”

When asked Friday about an assertion in his court papers that “Jews, historically and in daily living, act through clans and in wolf pack syndrome,” he said, “That one sort of rings a bell.”

What is, perhaps, most appalling to me in this article is something of which I was completely unaware, but not shocked:

But an appearance in a documentary-style program on the Fox News Channel watched by three million people last week thrust the man, Andy Martin, and his past into the foreground. The program allowed Mr. Martin to assert falsely and without challenge that Mr. Obama had once trained to overthrow the government. (emphasis mine)

This goes, I think, to one of the key differences between progressives and conservatives:  progressive pundits, as a rule, do not lie to slander their opponents.  Witness Olbermann and Maddow.  They do not go on their shows and randomly make shit up.  They do not feature wacko progressives who might.  Conservative pundits, however, as a rule, do.  Witness Hannity and O’Reilly.  They, and their network, “fair and balanced” be damned, feature wackos like Martin who do, indeed, randomly make shit up.  And they feature it as fact.
