The man behind the smears

Yesterday, the New York Times published an article called, The Man Behind the Whispers About Obama.  I

Andy Martin

Andy Martin

encourage you to read the whole thing.  There are some key points that, I think, are useful for me to highlight.  First, his name is Andy Martin and he’s been at this since 2004.  He is a would-be attorney, who attended law school but was never admitted to the bar:

He is a law school graduate, but his admission to the Illinois bar was blocked in the 1970s after a psychiatric finding of “moderately severe character defect manifested by well-documented ideation with a paranoid flavor and a grandiose character.”

He is anti-Semitic:

He prepared to run as a Democrat for Congress in Connecticut, where paperwork for one of his campaign committees listed as one purpose “to exterminate Jew power.”

(snip)

Yet in various court papers, Mr. Martin had impugned Jews.

A motion he filed in a 1983 bankruptcy case called the judge “a crooked, slimy Jew who has a history of lying and thieving common to members of his race.”

In another motion, filed in 1983, Mr. Martin wrote, “I am able to understand how the Holocaust took place, and with every passing day feel less and less sorry that it did.”

In an interview, Mr. Martin denied some statements against Jews attributed to him in court papers, blaming malicious judges for inserting them.

But in his “48 Hours” interview in 1993, he affirmed a different anti-Semitic part of the affidavit that included the line about the Holocaust, saying, “The record speaks for itself.”

When asked Friday about an assertion in his court papers that “Jews, historically and in daily living, act through clans and in wolf pack syndrome,” he said, “That one sort of rings a bell.”

What is, perhaps, most appalling to me in this article is something of which I was completely unaware, but not shocked:

But an appearance in a documentary-style program on the Fox News Channel watched by three million people last week thrust the man, Andy Martin, and his past into the foreground. The program allowed Mr. Martin to assert falsely and without challenge that Mr. Obama had once trained to overthrow the government. (emphasis mine)

This goes, I think, to one of the key differences between progressives and conservatives:  progressive pundits, as a rule, do not lie to slander their opponents.  Witness Olbermann and Maddow.  They do not go on their shows and randomly make shit up.  They do not feature wacko progressives who might.  Conservative pundits, however, as a rule, do.  Witness Hannity and O’Reilly.  They, and their network, “fair and balanced” be damned, feature wackos like Martin who do, indeed, randomly make shit up.  And they feature it as fact.

There are so many things wrong with this

Watch this:

Let’s review:

1.  The economy will certainly come into the debate, hence McCain’s reluctance to debate.

2.  Let’s review:  Obama has proposed five bills during this session of Congress that have gone to the banking committee.  McCain?  Zero.

3.  I can’t believe Michael Reagan brought up Franklin Raines, who has a tangential, at best, relationship to the Obama campaign, when it’s McCain who has a former Fannie Mae / Freddie Mac guy RUNNING HIS CAMPAIGN.  These guys are unbelievable.

4.  And, of course, we have the obvious slamming of the door when the Keating 5 scandal comes up.  Not even Chris Matthews slams the door that hard.

More Props to Nas

A bit ago, I gave Props to Nas for a song on his new album.  The song, “Black President,” is aimed at Obama and features lyrics like, “Yes we can, Change the World.”  Seems like Nas is doing his part to do just that.  He has joined with ColorofChange.org in their campaign against Fox News and Fox’s habit of spewing racist propaganda on air (witness terrorist fist jab, the baby mama incident, etc.).  For the full details, check out Fox News On-Air Racism Challenged by Huge Petition Drive and Hot Rapper Nas.

UPDATE:  For video of the event and some coverage on The Colbert Report, check out this great coverage at The Super Spade.

Why I love Jack and Jill Politics

Jack and Jill Politics is one of my fave blogs.  I’m really hoping to meet them at the convention in August, but I digress.  Right now, on their blog, you can read this piece:  Why We Must Challenge Fake Noise.  It’s an excellent piece giving our man Obama a bit of a hardtime about his Father’s Day speech.  They put into eloquence exactly what I’ve been thinking, but wasn’t sure how (as a really white chick blogger) to say.  Essentially, their point is that Obama’s preaching about black men being lousy fathers is a lousy way to represent the model of black man as father.  And his doing so gives idiots like the folks at Fox Noise fodder for their hate mongering.

Here’s where I’m gonna do that white person thing:  I know a lot of black men (see, I just did it) who are great fathers.  Seriously.  Some of them are married to the mothers of their children and some of them are not.  Of the ones who are married, some of them are happily so and some are not.  But whatever their circumstance, the running thread seems to be utter devotion to their kids.  Do I know some deadbeat black Dads?  Absolutely.  But I know just as many white ones.  And Obama wasn’t talking about them, was he?

I’m with Jack and Jill on this one.  Obama’s my man and sometimes we have to be hard on the ones we love.  Please go read their piece and make your own comments.

I’m dizzy ….

Just as I was reviewing some data on my last post about the US confronting it’s issues with racism, I get notice of this post from last night over at DailyKos:

Fox Smears Michelle Obama with Sexist/Racist Slur

Please go over there and read the post and look at the screen shot.  In order to respect the fact that they have the story, I won’t republish it.  But I will tell you that, with Michelle Malkin hosting, the caption under the picture of Michelle Obama reads this:

“Outraged Liberals:  Stop Picking On Obama’s Baby Mama!”

What?!?!  Are you kidding me?  Is it possible that a mainstream media outlet, even one as crazy as FOX Noise, really just went that far into the racist barrel?  The room is spinning ….
